Sandy Bay – Petterwood

Our clients in Sandy Bay wanted to remodel their 1970s two-story bungalow while honouring its original charm. Collaborating with Melbourne-based Flack Studio, the design beautifully blends retro elements with modern luxury. The project retained the home’s original footprint, with extensive internal updates and a new spotted gum deck that connects seamlessly to the living areas.

The renovation involved gutting the home and re-leveling floors with a 100mm variation, demolishing internal walls, and replacing all windows with Tasmanian oak-framed floor-to-ceiling designs. Tasmanian timber was repurposed for key features like the blackwood hallway overlooking a conservatory, and the original brickwork and stone details were carefully preserved. The top floor now boasts a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that flows onto a sandstone deck, plus a wine room, conservatory, rumpus, and bedrooms—all with ensuite bathrooms.

Downstairs is a retreat in itself, featuring a master suite, laundry, gym, study, and striking design details. Exposed beams, brass accents, and burnt orange carpet evoke the 1970s, while modern touches like precision joinery, terrazzo tiles, and handcrafted cabinetry elevate the aesthetic. Materials were handpicked by Emma and David Flack, adding bespoke character throughout.

This was a challenging yet rewarding project, involving up to 20 tradespeople at its peak. It also marked a milestone for our second-year apprentice, who excelled in creating standout features like the floating staircase and blackwood hallway. Projects like this remind us of the importance of mentoring the next generation, fostering skills and confidence along the way.
